Collision vs. Comprehensive: Which Claim Raises Your Premium?

Hail, glass, animals, theft, or a fender bender — the coverage type decides whether your rate moves. Here is the plain-English version.

Comprehensive

Comprehensive covers damage largely outside your control: glass damage, hitting an animal, hail and storm damage, vandalism, and theft. These claims generally will not increase your premium.

Collision

Collision covers impact with another vehicle or object. Premiums may increase only if you are found to be more than 49% at fault. If you are found not at fault, you either do not pay your collision deductible or you are reimbursed for it if you paid up front.
